Engaging with citizens: An introduction to designing and running focus groups

Who is this course for?

This training course is aimed at local authority colleagues. Please note: there is a maximum of two delegates per council.

The course is intentionally ‘basic’ in its approach and content, and is aimed at beginners. No previous knowledge of data or statistics is required.

What will I learn?

This training course provides practical advice and guidance to help you understand why, how and when you might organise and run a focus group to support your work.

Focus groups are often used to engage with a small group of citizens to understand how they feel about an issue, policy, product, or person. They usually involve six to eight participants being led through a discussion by one or two facilitators.

This course will cover:
- what focus groups are, their purpose, and when to use them
- the key elements needed to design focus groups
- how to select participants and secure participation, including ways to engage hard-to-reach participants
how to run a focus group.
