Get support for your research funding bid

We can provide support for your research funding bids. Information about the projects we support can be found on our Project finder.

Our Research Support and Engagement Framework sets out the formal support we can offer to researchers and the criteria we use to decide what we support.

What support do we get asked about?

Researchers often ask us to:

  • promote a research study on our communication channels, like social media
  • endorse their study, which they can state on their applications
  • sit on panels for the review of funding applications
  • sit on advisory or steering groups for research studies
  • take part in research studies as participants - for interviews or focus groups
  • write letters in general support of funding applications, like confirming that the topic or research question is of significant interest for social care in Wales or confirming that we’ll support researchers with specific project tasks
  • give permission to access data held in the SAIL Databank on registered people
  • partner formally in research studies, for example as part of a consortium
  • invite registered people and other individuals to participate in research studies.

When to contact us

Please get in touch with us early on in your bid development if you'd like our support.

We’re happy to have an informal conversation about your project and discuss ways we may be able to help.

We can also help you in refining your research questions and designing projects that can make a positive difference to social care.

Important information

Once you’re ready to make a formal request for our support, we’ll need to know:

  • what your project is, and what it aims to find out
  • what support you'd like us to provide
  • why it's important for Social Care Wales to support your project
  • the deadline for your funding bid.

I manage our research team. We encourage and promote good quality research on social care in and about Wales by setting research priorities, supporting researchers, and managing research projects. We pull together findings from research to provide insights for people working in social care through our Social Care Wales evidence summaries. Before working at Social Care Wales, I was a Research Fellow at the University of Bristol’s Centre for Research in Health and Social Care. My research includes paid care work, housing with care, and social care volunteers. I also taught social science research methods to master's degree students. Most recently, I carried out an NIHR, School for Social Care Research funded project on 'Covid, Closeness and Care'. This involved exploring how the COVID-19 pandemic impacted upon direct care provision in private homes and residential care homes for older people. My PhD research – carried out at Cardiff University (2018) – compared the experiences of care workers and the provision of care in a high-cost and a low-cost residential care home for older people.
