Research Conversations: Children’s Care-Experiences and their Educational Attainment
Wednesday 24 September 2025, 10:30am to 12pm (via Teams)
Children who spend only short periods in care, or enter care early or late in childhood, often struggle more with school compared to those with longer, more stable care experiences. However, we still don’t fully understand how different care experiences affect education or what support works best.
Come along to this session and talk to Dr Emily Lowthian from Swansea University, who has researched anonymised data about Welsh children. Dr Lowthian grouped different care experiences then tracked school performance at ages 7 and 11. Clear differences were found in attainment linked to care history.
In this session find out more about this research which highlights the need for tailored support to improve education for care-experienced children.
