Research Conversations: Kinship Care in Wales and Beyond
About the workshop
Kinship care is the most common alternative for children who cannot live with their parents. Despite how common it is, kinship care is often described as “invisible”—with carers receiving less recognition and support than foster or adoptive parents.
This workshop explores the realities of kinship care in Wales and beyond, sharing new research and creating space for discussion and reflection.

About the Projects
1. Siblings raising siblings
This study focused on families where an older sibling is the kinship carer for their younger siblings. Findings highlighted the motivations and life stories of these families, and how services might support these families.
2. Special Guardianship Orders in Wales
This project explores how prevalent Special Guardianship Orders are in Wales. The research also highlights disparities between children with an SGO compared with children in care and what support they may need when they enter school.
3. Kinship care, community and culture
This project explores the experiences and needs of children raised by kinship carers with a different ethnicity or culture to their own.
