What makes relational and responsive domiciliary care possible and what gets in the way?

What makes relational and responsive domiciliary care possible and what gets in the way?

Background

Domiciliary care is sometimes viewed as a simple task-based service and as such, can be misunderstood and undervalued. The reality is different. Commissioning, managing and delivering domiciliary care is complex and precious work focused on people with high support needs who are often living with challenging life circumstances. This requires what the psychologist, Barry Schwartz calls ‘practical wisdom’, which enables domiciliary care workers to practice in highly skilled relational and responsive ways to support good outcomes for the unique people they work with.

Whilst the media tend to focus on when things go wrong in social care services, this event is focused on when things go right. Good domiciliary care often pays attention to the little everyday things that matter to people. Paying attention to these little things is often the key to good outcomes.

Aim of the event

The event will bring together domiciliary care providers, commissioners, Welsh Government policy makers and researchers to share and explore good practice and the infrastructure required to encourage and support this.  The event will also provide an opportunity for story gathering around relational and responsive practice to support the ongoing recruitment and publicity work led by We Care Cymru – please bring your stories to share. 😊
