PhD placement scheme: Administrative Data Research (ADR) Wales social care theme

09 September 2024

We’re offering a PhD placement opportunity as part of our leadership role on the social care theme for the ADR Wales programme of work.

ADR Wales is part of the ADR UK investment. ADR UK brings together data and approved researchers to enable research that can inform policy decisions and more effective public services. In Wales, ADR Wales is made up of data science experts, leading academics from Swansea University and Cardiff University and specialist teams within Welsh Government. Together they produce data-driven evidence that can help to shape future policy decisions in Wales.

Who can apply?

Eligible students must be undertaking a PhD on social care at a higher education institution in Wales. The placement can be full time for a three-month period or part time for six months.

The aims of the scheme

We’re running this placement as part of our ADR Wales work to support and shape social care researchers for the future. The scheme will enhance the quality of research and, by making sure that research is accessible to people working in social care, it will also help to improve the quality of care and support for people in Wales.

Our PhD placements will provide an opportunity to:

  • apply and develop research skills to real-world issues
  • gain practical experience of carrying out research in the Welsh public sector
  • increase understanding and experience of social care policy and practice in Wales
  • develop personal and professional skills that can be applied to future careers
  • grow networks and connections amongst academics, policy makers and practitioners.

Areas of work

Successful applicants will be supported to contribute to a diverse programme of work that might include:

  • setting research priorities for linked data research
  • supporting our adult social care linked data research group
  • promoting the benefits of linked data research in adult social care through our Social Care Wales, Swansea University and ADR Wales channels
  • providing support and encouragement to data owners to share their data in the SAIL Databank
  • carrying out linked data research on a topic related to adult social care (we would support the successful student to apply for access to SAIL).

“During my PhD placement with Social Care Wales, I looked at de-identified data from its register and its annual workforce data collection. My work helped provide insight as to why these two key data sources might be different. My placement gave me an appreciation of the social care landscape in Wales. I also learnt a lot from being mentored by a great team of people. I know this experience is going to be really beneficial as my career develops.”

- Amy Davies, PhD student, Centre for Care and Social Care Wales.
